ANZIIF Board

The Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance Board controls, assists and directs the work of ANZIIF. It deals with all matters on which a decision is required in the interests of ANZIIF and its members. The Board is required to present a report at each Annual General Meeting on the finances and affairs of ANZIIF during the past year.

    Karl Armstrong joined NZI in 1971 and in 1977 was asked to participate in the UK Training scheme for 18 months in London and ended up staying for eighteen years. During his time in the United Kingdom, Karl managed the Birmingham operation of NZI Ltd and subsequently moved to Leeds to run the General Accident branch.

    In 1994, Karl returned to Wellington as Commercial Business Manager. In 1997, he began setting up NZI Accident Insurance ready for the opening of the ACC workers account and remained for another year until the incoming Labour government sold it to ACC.

    Karl then took up the role of Assistant General Manager Underwriting and when NZI was purchased by IAG Ltd in 2003, he took on the role as Head of Underwriting and Risk Management for the New Zealand operations, covering the State and NZI brands.

    In August 2008, Karl was appointed as the Executive General Manager at NZI.

    Allan joined Steadfast in 2002 and oversees broker products and services, strategic partner relationships and equity brokers.

    With a background in product development and distribution, corporate strategy and portfolio management, Allan has more than 40 years of industry experience in general insurance. He holds a Diploma of Business Studies (Insurance), is a Certified Insurance Professional and is a Fellow and Honorary Life Member of ANZIIF.

    Allan is a director of a number of Steadfast subsidiaries and affiliates.

    Prue attended the Queensland University of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws. Prior to her appointment as ANZIIF CEO, she was the General Manager, Corporate Operations at State Trustees, a role which included the oversight of Finance, Technology, Legal, Compliance, and Investments in a highly complex, medium size financial services company.

    She has over 20 years’ experience in the financial services sector, including management accounting at Macquarie Bank and policy development at Investment Funds and Superannuation Association.

    She has also held leadership roles in financial services product development, marketing and operations at Colonial Mutual and National Australia Bank. Prue was the Deputy Chancellor of Victoria University and the Chairman of the Resources Committee and is currently a Board member at Citywide Service Solutions, as well as a Board member at MyLife MyFinance.

    In October 2002, Jonathon Fox commenced with Elders Insurance as the National Claims Technical Insurance Manager and later moved onto National Manager Claims and Operational Services.

    Jonathon is currently General Manager of Elders Insurance and is responsible for management of end to end business operations for a 120-strong franchised agency network. In addition, he manages an employee team of 100 people.

    He has been employed in various roles within the insurance industry for almost 3 decades, commencing with AMP General Insurance Limited in 1990.  Jonathon has worked in both Adelaide and Sydney and held senior positions in Claims and roles in Underwriting and Customer Service. 

    Jonathon has a Bachelor of Management (Employee Relations Management) from the University of South Australia; an Australian Institute of Company Directors diploma; and a Certificate in Executive Decision Making from the Swiss Insurance Training Centre, Zurich.

    Andrew, a qualified accountant, joined the loss adjusting industry in 1984. In 1992, Andrew moved to Sydney to open an office on behalf of Robertson and Co. The business expanded considerably over the following 10 years until it was acquired as part of the Crawford & Company acquisition of Robertson and Co (Australia).

    In addition to handling major fire, mining and business interruption losses, Andrew has acted as the lead adjuster in Australia’s largest malicious product tamper (extortion) claims. Other significant experience includes large political risks, CAR, professional indemnity and product liability claims.

    Andrew was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Crawford Australia in November 2004 and has had responsibility for the Pacific Region since January 2014.  He is responsible for developing and implementing group strategy with a focus on innovation, growth and brand awareness.

    Callan McDonnell has over 20 years of experience in learning and development. He has worked in a number of different organisations in Africa, Asia, the UK and Australia focusing on instructional design, capability development, leadership development, talent management and workforce planning. 

    In Australia, Callan has run a training consultancy that provided a range of learning and development services, including setting up learning systems, process and assessment strategies for Registered Training Organisations. 

    Currently, Callan is the Executive Manager for the Commercial Insurance Learning Campus which supports all operational training design and delivery for Commercial Insurance within the Suncorp Group. Since joining Suncorp in 2015, he has worked on a number of key projects directed at staff retention strategies to address turnover as well as sourcing strategies used to attract talent and implementing capability frameworks that drive business performance

    Daniel is a Board member of ANZIIF and is passionate about developing and attracting talent to our industry. He was CEO General Insurance Australia and New Zealand for Zurich Insurance from mid 2012 until late 2015.  He joined Zurich in 2009 to manage the SME & Packages business and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2010, then Executive General Manager, Corporate in 2011. 

    Previously Daniel held several Executive General Manager positions in general insurance during his 51⁄2 years at Suncorp/Vero. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at Westpac in a variety of roles, covering many aspects of banking and insurance. Starting his career at KPMG, he is a Chartered Accountant and is a Sloan Fellow with a Masters from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, California.

    Daniel is a Fellow of ANZIIF, a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, and has a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Accounting, Finance & Systems) from the University of NSW.

    Megan Beer is the Director of Insurance, responsible for AMP's risk insurance portfolio. Megan joined AMP in February 2014. She has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, and has performed a range of executive, finance, actuarial and consulting roles. 

    Most recently, Megan was the General Manager of Bancassurance and Direct at NAB/MLC, and prior to that General Manager of Group Insurance and Head of Finance for Insurance both at MLC. She has also been Chief Actuary, Chief Risk Officer, and Head of Claims at TAL, and was a Director with Tillinghast (Consulting Actuaries).

    Megan is an actuary and holds an MBA (Executive) and Master of Economics.

    Paul Allison was born in Essex, England in 1954, and emigrated to Australia in 1967 when his father accepted a job as a Reinsurance Broker in Sydney.

    Paul accepted a job at MLC Life in 1972 during which time he completed his studies at UTS Sydney. He has spent 31 years in the reinsurance industry - 17 years on the underwriting side where he was General Manager of Copenhagen Re, then Sydney Re and the remainder as a Reinsurance broker - as a Managing Director at MBR and now C.O.O. at Guy Carpenter.

    Paul has been involved with reinsurance education for the Institute for over 25 years, both as an examiner and a member of the program committee for the Reinsurance Study Course. He was instrumental in taking the Reinsurance Study Course to China for two consecutive years in 1998 and 1999. He has been a Company Director since 1988 and has also served as a member of the NSW Branch Executive Committee and the Board of Advice of Risk Frontiers since 2002.

    Paul credits his career success to a wide range of caring people in the business, all of whom have supported, influenced and mentored him.

    Paul has been married for 34 years and has three children.

    Paul has in excess of 25 years industry experience and has an extensive knowledge of reinsurance and insurance. He is currently Executive General Manager at Rothbury Insurance Brokers.

    His prior role was as General Manager – Broker Products, Lumley General, in which he had overall responsibility for the underwriting and claims for Lumley General’s five commercial portfolio’s. Other past roles include General Manger Corporate, AON NZ, Manager for NZ EIG-Ansvar and Client Manager Swiss Re. 
     
    He is a past Board member for the Insurance Council of New Zealand and is a past examiner for the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance. Paul became President of ANZIIF’s New Zealand Member Advisory Board in July 2013.

    Tim began his career with T&G Life in 1979 (now part of the AXA group) in a customer service role. After three years in that role, he joined his father’s small life and general insurance agency (Considine’s Insurance). In this role, Tim built a portfolio of clients to service with a particular target and focus on Professional Indemnity for engineers.

    In 1993, Tim opened up a branch office for GIO Australia in Box Hill whilst continuing to service the Professional Indemnity portfolio. Six years later Tim was approached by Countrywide Tolstrup to join them in part of their succession planning strategy which led to his appointment as Managing Director in 2006.

    Austbrokers Countrywide has continued to grow and has acquired three Melbourne broking firms (John Smith Insurance Brokers, ACI Insurance Brokers (Vic) and Hamilton & Hamilton Insurance Brokers) since July 2009. Some career highlights for Tim include being elected as Chairman of the Austbrokers Network Steering Committee in 2005 and to the Board of Austbrokers and IBNA Member Services (AIMS) in 2010.

    Dr. Tony Lee has over 15 years of experience in the Banking and Insurance Industry specializing in strategic management, business development, risk underwriting, insurance broking, global insurance placement, reinsurance placement, enterprise safety management, corporate training, financial planning, human resources consulting and employee benefits consulting.  

    In January 2016, Tony was appointed by Allied World Assurance Company Limited as the Assistant Vice President responsible for underwriting and distribution management. Prior to joining Allied World, Tony was the Executive Director of Seascope Risk Services (Hong Kong) Limited and the Director & Chief Representative of Willis Hong Kong Limited, Macau Branch Office. 

    Tony has a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Tarlac State University, a Master of Laws Degree from The University of Wolverhampton, a Master of Business Administration Degree from Charles Sturt University, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from The Open University of Hong Kong, a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from University of Lincoln and a Professional Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health from Hong Kong Baptist University. He is currently a Part-Time Lecturer of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Vocational Training Council.
