Richard Enthoven Wins 2024 ANZIIF Lifetime Achiever Award

Richard Enthoven, founder of Hollard Insurance and PetSure, has been honoured with the 2024 ANZIIF Lifetime Achiever Award.

This prestigious award recognises his outstanding contributions to the insurance industry, reflecting a career dedicated to innovation, leadership, and fostering a more inclusive environment.
Enthoven’s career in the insurance industry has been dedicated to addressing complex challenges and driving meaningful change.

His leadership has not only advanced the capabilities of Hollard and PetSure but also set a precedent for tackling industry-wide issues.

As he continues to shape the sector’s future, his contributions underscore the importance of innovation, strategic thinking, and inclusivity in achieving lasting progress.

A vision for customer-centric insurance

In 1999, Richard Enthoven saw an opportunity to transform the insurance landscape.

Noticing a gap for customer-focused insurance solutions, he founded Hollard Insurance with a clear vision: to create insurance products that truly addressed people’s needs.

Enthoven’s journey began with a simple idea and grew into a major success story. “When I started Hollard, my goal was to make insurance more accessible and relevant to people’s lives,” he recalls.

Under his leadership, Hollard quickly became a well-regarded name in the industry, known for its innovative approach and commitment to customers.

Enthoven’s focus on empowering his team and encouraging them to take risks led to remarkable growth.

“I’ve always believed that taking risks and learning from failures can lead to significant breakthroughs,” he says. His approach not only shaped Hollard but also set a standard for innovation in the industry.

Championing diversity and inclusion

A prominent feature of Enthoven’s career has been his strong advocacy for diversity and inclusion (D&I). He has consistently emphasised that a diverse workplace is crucial for long-term success.

“Diversity isn’t just about meeting quotas; it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and included,” he asserts.

Enthoven’s commitment to D&I is evident in his leadership style and the culture at Hollard and PetSure. He has been an active supporter of women’s issues and has worked to ensure that his companies reflect a diverse and inclusive ethos. “It’s important that we create spaces where people from all backgrounds can thrive,” he adds.

This commitment has not gone unnoticed. Enthoven’s efforts to build inclusive workplaces were a key factor in his receiving the ANZIIF Lifetime Achiever Award.

The judges praised his dedication to fostering an environment where all employees feel supported.

Shaping the future of insurance

Beyond his work with Hollard and PetSure, Enthoven has influenced the broader insurance industry.

He co-founded Greenstone Financial Services and PetSure Australia, expanding his impact into the pet insurance sector. His role as a director at Trupanion Inc. further highlights his commitment to improving insurance options globally.

Looking ahead, Enthoven sees affordability and accessibility as critical challenges for the industry. “As the cost of claims rises, we need to find ways to keep insurance products affordable and relevant to people’s needs,” he says.

His forward-thinking approach also addresses the challenges posed by recent regulatory changes, which he believes must balance necessary reforms with the need to keep insurance accessible.

Enthoven’s contributions to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) from 2013 to 2024, including his time as president, reflect his dedication to shaping the future of the industry.

“Guiding the ICA through a period of significant change was both challenging and rewarding,” he says. His work in policy and regulation has helped steer the industry through complex issues, ensuring that it remains responsive to both market and consumer needs.

A lasting legacy

Looking back on his career, Enthoven sees his achievements not just as personal but as part of a larger trajectory in the insurance industry.

“This award is a recognition of the collective effort of everyone at Hollard and PetSure,” he says.
