A chartered engineer and building consultant, Deniz Bekir started preparing expert reports and scopes of work for the insurance industry following the 2010 Kalgoorlie–Boulder earthquake in Western Australia and shortly after, the Brisbane floods and Cyclone Yasi in Queensland.
Bekir's owner-business, Silver Wolf Projects, quickly built a reputation and began to grow in the subsequent years. After 18 years of operation within the insurance industry, Silver Wolf Projects is a national business with over 50 branches.
Bekir and the newly formed body AIBEC (Association of Insurance Building Engineering Consultants) collaborated with ANZIIF as subject matter experts to develop the one-hour-long Getting It Right: right expert, right job, right time short course, which is available to ANZIIF members for free in the month of April.
The ANZIIF Getting It Right Course provides a basis for claims professionals and brokers to better understand the process of instructing experts. It was created as a response to the "Inquiry into insurers’ responses to 2022 major floods claims conducted by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics.
The committee's report, titled "Flood failure to future fairness", emphasised that insurers failed to meet their obligations to policyholders after the 2022 floods. It highlighted that more than two years after the events, many people still couldn't return to their homes due to unresolved claims.
The report made 86 recommendations aimed at improving the insurance industry's response to natural disasters and enhancing consumer protections.
All ANZIIF members have access to the Getting It Right: right expert, right job, right time course for free until April 30.
