Trends in Quality Assurance & Regulatory Operations

Overview

This session will be a combination of presentation and panel discussion. It will examine the key challenges facing general insurers, life insurers, and insurance brokers, and emerging risks to meeting community expectations and delivering good customer outcomes. The panel will share insights from their monitoring of Code compliance and explore how insurers and brokers can address these risks, better meet their Code commitments, and improve outcomes for customers.

Prue has extensive regulatory experience and a strong focus on practice improvement and public benefit. Prue is currently the General Manager Codes and CEO Banking Code Compliance with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). In this role, Prue supports the work of five independent Committees overseeing code monitoring activities, investigations of alleged code breaches and promoting industry best-practice across Australia’s financial services sector.

Prior to joining AFCA, Prue was the Executive Director of Regulatory Operations at Australia’s higher education regulator, the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency. She was previously Director of Compliance at the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). This included responsibility for the ACNC’s Compliance directorate focused on identifying and investigating abuse and mismanagement in Australia’s charity sector and helping charities build their governance capabilities.

She has also held senior roles in the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, including as the National Manager of the Allegations Assessment Team and overseas postings in Shanghai and Beirut focused on program integrity, compliance, and fraud prevention.

Prue holds an Executive Master of Public Administration.

Jared leads the teams supporting the General Insurance Code Governance Committee and Life Code Compliance Committee in their roles monitoring and enforcing each industry's Code of Practice.

Jared has a depth of experience in regulatory and compliance roles, previously leading teams at the higher education regulator TEQSA, and is a former academic and educator with a PhD from the University of Melbourne.

Daniela Kirchlinde is the Senior Manager for the Insurance Brokers Code of Practice at the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). With a career spanning three decades, Daniela has been a driving force in complaints handling and compliance management, having previously served as Complaints and Compliance Manager at AFCA and its predecessor schemes since 1995.

Her deep expertise in dispute resolution is backed by extensive experience across the financial services sector, including insurance broking and customer-owned banking. Daniela’s career also includes roles in England and Germany, giving her a broad international perspective and a nuanced understanding of regulatory environments.

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Cologne University (Germany) and a Graduate Diploma in Finance and Investment from the Australian Securities Institute in Melbourne. Daniela is known for her strategic oversight, regulatory acumen, and clear communication style that consistently drives compliance improvements and delivers value. Her proactive leadership fosters positive outcomes and strong stakeholder engagement, making her a respected voice in the industry.

Karen Stephens is the co-founder and CEO of BCyber. After more than 25 years in financial services, Karen moved into SME cybersecurity risk management. She works with SMEs to protect and grow their businesses by demystifying the technical aspects of cybersecurity and helping them identify and address cybersecurity and governance risk gaps.

She was named inaugural Female Cyber Leader of the Year at the 2023 CyberSecurity Connect Awards in Canberra and has been a finalist in 2024 and 2025 in the Australian Cyber Awards for Cyber Security Professional of the Year - Professional and Financial Services.

As the Analytics Manager at Munich Re Australia, Dr Mei Sun Yee specialises in bridging the gap between climate and natural hazard trends into actionable insights and solutions.

With more than a decade of experience spanning climate science, catastrophe modelling, product development and geospatial risk intelligence, she brings a holistic perspective on how climate and urban growth shape exposure and losses.

Mei holds a PhD in Engineering and works closely with research institutes to advance science based resilience.
