AICLA/ANZIIF Claims Convention

The AICLA/ANZIIF Claims Convention (CC19) is the leading insurance claims event in Australasia, attracting delegates, industry experts and world-class speakers from across Australia, New Zealand the Pacific and Asia. This year marks the 13th Claims Convention, a successful collaboration between AICLA and ANZIIF.

Themed ‘Disasters, Disruption & Regulation’, the AICLA/ANZIIF Claims Convention is designed to give claims professionals the insights and knowledge, they need to tackle the key issues facing their sector both now and moving into the future.

A dynamic program is planned, and the event is an ideal opportunity to socialise and network with professionals in the claims industry.

    Paul Angus heads the General Insurance practice group at TurksLegal and has over 23 years’ experience in the general insurance industry.

    Practising exclusively for insurers and self-insured corporations, Paul has been involved in several significant tort and insurance cases during his career including acting for the NSW TAB in the High Court case regarding an occupier’s responsibility for the acts of third parties on the occupier’s premises and for the insurer in leading Insurance Contracts Act cases of Stealth Enterprises v Calliden Insurance, Camellia Properties v Wesfarmers General Insurance and Allianz v Haddad. In addition to public liability and Insurance Contract Act issues, Paul’s areas of expertise include contract works, property damage (commercial, domestic and motor vehicle), flood and water damage claims, householders and commercial property liability, theft, arson and fraud claims, trade credit, accident & health, travel and recovery actions on behalf of insurers.

    Andrew assists clients with financial lines insurance and professional indemnity matters.  He is particularly sought after in construction-related claims, both in Australia and internationally.  In particular, multi-national insurers turn to him to defend claims against architects, structural and geotechnical engineers, building surveyors, draftspersons and others in the construction, property and real estate industries.
    Andrew is adept at providing construction-based coverage advice to insurers and is known for his experience in running complex technical disputes and is highly regarded for his work in the building and property list of VCAT.  He is routinely dealing with building defect claims involving cladding products (which were of course the subject of the Lacrosse Litigation) and structural engineering issues (which are common to the Opal Tower dispute).
    Andrew also assists insurers and their insured clients in professional indemnity claims across a wide range of professions, including matters involving property developers, lawyers, real estate agents, financial planners and mortgage brokers.

    Bruce is a very senior meteorologist and climatologist with 42 years’ experience. He has been involved in IAG Reinsurance’s Natural Perils and Climate Change Research, including development of hail, tropical cyclone and flood models, as well as the significant weather reporting. His key areas of interest include tropical cyclones, severe thunderstorms, including hail storms, mid latitude extreme weather systems and climate change issues. He has had prior experience working for the Bureau of Meteorology in various roles in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, the United Nations Development Program and Austrade in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as Chief Meteorologist for The Weather Channel and The Weather Company, as well as an environmental advisor for BHP. He has been involved in climate change research with IAG, Woodside Energy and Rio Tinto. He has co-authored five books and has numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications. He was Team Meteorologist for the Australian Sailing Team’s very successful London and Rio Olympics and Paralympics campaigns.

    With 22 years of policing experience at the highest levels, 13 of those as a crisis negotiator, Lance combines advanced communication techniques, psychologically-based safety practices, and personal resilience tips for everyday use to keep ourselves safe and well. He brings together experience from training in New Zealand, Australia, England and the USA while operating with the elite sectors of police, prisons, emergency services, the military, and the FBI. His programmes of applied techniques are grounded in science, simple to use, and extremely effective. Lance has a Diploma in Policing, a Diploma in Business Studies and a Master of Arts majoring in Terrorism, Safety & Security. He published the bestselling book – Behind The Tape – and makes regular media appearances.

    Lance will cover topics such as; why it is that people are becoming overwhelmed in today’s world, how to control emotions in challenging situations, why change can be difficult to accept and/or implement, how to identify the signs of stress in ourselves, and how to bring balance back to our lives. Additionally, he will show us how to motivate and energise ourselves when at work, how to switch off at the end of a busy day, how to get to sleep within just a few breaths, and how to stop waking between 3 & 4 am with feelings of anxiousness.

    Annabelle is an insurance professional with more than 20 years of experience, mainly in the public policy, consumer affairs and financial resilience disciplines.  She is the current Chair of the National GI Code Committee and actively participated in and led the development of the new Code with the ICA and fellow Committee members.

    Annabelle is currently responsible for the Insurance part of Suncorp’s Financial Inclusion Action Plan and the day to day management of Essentials by AAI, Australia’s first “micro-insurer”.  As part of this work, Annabelle is responsible for improving community access to financial services, ensuring that the people who need them the most, can access and utilise them efficiently and fairly. 

    Annabelle is an advocate for evidence based policy development that enables systems of risk transfer and access to essential services to work efficiently and inclusively across the economy.  As such Annabelle also is an active member of Advisory Boards for the Australian Centre of Financial Studies and the Consumer Policy Research Centre.

    Sophie is a Partner at DLA Piper, specialising in litigation and regulatory issues within the insurance sector. 

    She provides regulatory advice to participants in the financial services industry relating to compliance and risk management issues particularly for general and life insurers, intermediaries and insurance brokers. In the regulatory space, Sophie assists clients across the insurance industry on both contentious and non-contentious matters.  She advises clients on breach reporting, compliance programs, remediation programs and reviews, investigations and notices from regulators.

    Sophie also advises on policy wording, authorised representative agreements, and commercial distribution agreements in the sector.

    Sophie’s litigation practice includes advising clients (policy issuer and policy holder) on public liability/occupiers liability, product liability, professional indemnity and personal injury claims against a range of professionals including health professionals, property disputes and commercial litigation.  She also advises in defence of workplace health and safety prosecutions.  A key area of focus for Sophie is defence of Australian Financial Services(AFS) licensees (in particular insurance brokers).

    Sophie is listed in the AFR 'Best Lawyers' for insurance law.  She is also the Lawyer of the Year for Professional MalPractice in Brisbane in 'Best Lawyers' in 2019/20.

He is a Young Insurance Professional of the Year finalist in the ANZIIF Australian Insurance Industry Awards 2019.

    Susan Donaldson is Head of Claims for Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance. Based in Sydney, Susan is responsible for setting claims strategy and managing claims performance for BHSI in Australia. She is a member of the Australian Leadership Team and Global Claims Leadership Team.

    Susan joined BHSI at its opening in Australia in March 2015 and has built an exceptional claims team across BHSI’s many and varied lines of business. Delivering on BHSI’s “claims is our product” message, the claims team provide a prompt and empathetic claims experience to BHSI’s customers.

    Susan began her career as a legal practitioner with Moray & Agnew, prior to moving to claims management roles in specialty and liability lines with Chubb and Zurich. Susan is active in the insurance industry and regularly presents with the Australia Insurance Law Association and the Australia Professional Indemnity Group. She is also involved in mentoring programs for young professionals.

    Damian holds a Graduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and he spent time in education as a lecturer and tutorial leader for Victoria University and Holmesglen TAFE.

    Damian is passionate about developing people to deliver growth across the insurance and finance sectors.

The most rewarding aspect of insurance for Glenn is being able to help customers when they need it most. Spending time with his family is the most important thing for Glenn outside of work, whilst always keen to watch (given his playing days are well behind him) a game of NRL or cricket.

    Jaye has been actively involved with the Australasian Institute of Chartered Loss Adjusters and has served on the AICLA Board since 1999 and currently holds two prominent roles – as President of AICLA (elected since 2018) and International Development Director for the last decade. He is responsible for expanding AICLA’s membership base across the region and internationally. AICLA has international membership chapters in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam and is further expanding this to the Middle East and Europe.

    Jaye is the founder and Managing Director of VRS ANA Pty Ltd, an international loss adjusting company with offices across Australia, Singapore and globally in association with corporate partners.

    As General Manager for the Policy, Risk and Disaster Planning Directorate, Karl is responsible for the facilitation of industry policy and initiatives regarding emerging risks as well as coordinating the industries response and partnership with government following a significant disaster event.

    Karl brings with him significant experience in the disaster planning and risk management field. Prior to joining the Insurance Council, Karl was responsible for global Disaster Planning, Response and Mitigation for the Qantas Group of Companies. In conjunction with that role, Karl was active in international and domestic forums focused on a wide range of disaster events and emerging risks.

    Prior to Qantas, Karl enjoyed a career in the Royal Australian Air Force, including several operational flying tours and appointments responsible for consequence management and disaster planning.
