When Angela Mosedale, Underwriting Assistant at Agile Underwriting Services, got the call to advise that she had won the inaugural Lloyd’s and ANZIIF Scholarship last year, she was both thrilled and a little shocked.
“I imagine there were many great ideas out there,” says Mosedale, whose confidential winning pitch involved boosting the Lloyd’s brand using technology,
“To win the inaugural scholarship was very special,” she adds. “By nature, I am a shy person, so to put myself out there and present my idea to three senior insurance professionals was daunting, to say the least.”
A suitable fit
Mosedale got into insurance quite late in her career, having started her working life in hospitality as a revenue analyst for a five-star hotel chain.
“When Covid hit, I had some downtime to think about a change,” she tells. “An acquaintance mentioned that Agile Underwriting was looking for a finance person, and with my background and willingness to learn, I considered myself a suitable fit.”
After two years in finance working closely with underwriters, Mosedale decided she wanted to jump the fence and join them.
With support and encouragement from the Agile leadership team, she completed her Tier 1 in General Insurance. “Luckily, an underwriting assistant position presented itself, and I haven’t looked back,” she says.
Complex risks
In her role, Mosedale is responsible for multiple classes of business, so no day is the same.
“I most enjoy working on complex risks that allow me to apply my analytical skills,” she shares. “I have a great team to work with, and we all respect and value each other’s ideas.”
She says her main challenge is working from home on a regular basis without face-to-face access to the team.
“Technology is so good now, but I do miss the constant opportunities to learn on the job from senior team members,” she says. “I sometimes miss the office small talk as well.”
Hard work and dedication
Following her scholarship win, Mosedale's proudest career achievement was her pivotal contribution to obtaining the Accident and Health binder authority for Agile Underwriting Services' Syndicate AUS 2427, which received Lloyd's approval to commence operations in May, 2024.
A testament to her hard work and dedication, Mosedale says she could not have done it "without the support of so many colleagues”.
Her immediate goal this year is to work towards her underwriting authority for drones and to learn more about the aviation industry.
“Drones are becoming increasingly popular in all different types of business, and it is very interesting to see this develop so quickly,” she says.
“My longer-term goal is to work my way up into a senior position with Agile and mentor younger insurance professionals. I would like to pass on my knowledge and experiences to help the next generation.”
New doors opened
Mosedale says winning the inaugural Lloyd’s Scholarship last year has raised her profile and expanded her professional network.
“It has given me the confidence to pursue underwriting further and the desire to keep learning and improving my skill set,” she says.
“I look forward to increased travel and exposure to new and developing markets that provide a deeper insight into the insurance industry.
“Winning the scholarship has opened new doors for me and I am looking forward to a successful future in the industry.”
Her advice to potential scholarship entrants is to “be creative, think outside the box, and don’t limit yourself.”
“I watched a lot of YouTube videos when researching my idea, which helped the creativity flow,” she shares.
“Don’t be afraid to seek advice and brainstorm ideas with your peers. Refer to the Lloyd’s website, as there is so much information available.”
Staying current
In addition, Mosedale suggests that potential entrants need to stay up to date with the Lloyd’s marketplace, especially in terms of its innovation.
“Finally, read and re-read the brief to make sure you answer everything concisely,” she says. “The hardest thing is keeping the idea to one page.
“To those considering entering this year, put yourself out there; you’ve got nothing to lose.”
