During his 47 years within the insurance industry, Karl has gained major experience in Underwriting, Reinsurance, Relationship Management, Governance and Risk and was named Insurance Leader of the Year in 2014. He was also recognised with the ANZIIF Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

Karl started his career with NZI in Nelson, New Zealand, in 1971. In the next few years, he was given an opportunity to go to the UK on a training scheme. Based in London, this was an 18-month development opportunity. He decided to remain in the UK and stayed there for 18 years undertaking various Management roles in Southend, Birmingham and Leeds. Karl made the decision to return to New Zealand in the 90s, undertaking the role of Wellington Broker Branch Manager. He was chosen to move to Auckland to set up two new facilities, Marsh Bonus and the AON Client Placement Facility (CPF). While working in this role, the New Zealand Government decided to privatise workers compensation insurance, ACC, which provided a new opportunity for Karl. He was appointed to set this up as the Accident Insurance division of NZI.

In 2001, he was appointed to the position of EGM of Underwriting for NZI and subsequently IAG NZ. Having started his career there, Karl was made CEO of NZI in 2008, holding that position for six years.
In 2014, Karl moved from running the highly successful NZI to become Chief Risk Officer for IAG NZ. During this time, he spent two years closing down the EQ claims of Christchurch and implementing the strategies to deal with the Kaikoura EQ. Last year, Karl returned to once again lead NZI and spent the last few years of his working life there, retiring in June 2018.
Karl is a Fellow of ANZIIF, a board member of ANZIIF and Immediate Past President.
