Risk Management

ANZIIF’s Risk Management Faculty Advisory Board (RMFAB) contributes to the achievement of ANZIIF’s vision by providing support and guidance for Faculty activity. RM FAB members are highly respected industry experts and have significant experience as council or Board members.

The key objective of the RM FAB is to act as a peak body of experienced and talented experts in the field of Risk Management, unified in its commitment to help ANZIIF provide meaningful service to enhance the professionalism, ethics and community standing of those working in this sector.

    Samantha’s experience in risk management spans more than a decade, evolving from her position as national insurance manager for the Department of Defence. Since then she has held a number of risk advisor positions across the public and private sector, including a number of large general government clients and statutory authorities. Samantha has also contributed to developing the risk maturity for a number of Government agencies through advisory services, bespoke risk management workshops and numerous risk management presentations, including presentations at key industry forums and conferences.

    Samantha’s most recent position is at the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority as the Manager, Client Services for the Public Health Care Program, which has a significant risk portfolio to consider, particularly with respect to medical indemnity risk.

    She has completed a Masters in Risk Management through Monash University in 2008 and is also an ANZIIF Fellow.

    Sandra has over 20 years insurance industry experience primarily in reinsurance, but has also included roles in underwriting, project management, and more recently in risk management. She has developed and implemented risk management frameworks and culture in insurance and financial planning, business continuity and crisis management plans, and facilitated many risk identification workshops at both company and project levels.

    After a decade spent in country Victoria where she was involved in economic and community development and also lectured for RMIT, she returned to city life in Melbourne to take up a position with APRA where she is responsible for prudential oversight of a portfolio of general insurers.

    Kai is a highly experienced global insurance leader who started his career at Lloyds of London and has since then accumulated more than 35 years of experience working in Australasia, Asia, North America, the Middle East and Switzerland.

    He has a deep passion for the risk and insurance sector and a desire to change society's perception of the industry by transforming the overall insurance journey and greatly improving the value of protection offered to insurance buyers.

    Prior to co-founding Vallum Kai, he spent almost 10 years as an Executive at Zurich Australia where he built its successful Global Corporate business and most recently held the role of General Manager for New Zealand.

    He is a former Board Member of the Insurance Council of New Zealand and sits on ANZIIF's New Zealand Management Advisory Board as well as its Risk Management Faculty Advisory Board. He is also a founding member of Insurtech New Zealand.

    Natasha is the Managing Director of Hall Advisory Services Pty Ltd, a boutique governance, risk management and compliance consultancy. Hall Advisory employs a number of specialist consultants with a background in regulatory compliance, risk management and corporate governance.


    Natasha has extensive practical experience in risk management and regulatory compliance across the financial services sector, including senior positions at KPMG Australia, S&P Global Ratings and APRA. While she specialises in insurance and superannuation, Natasha also consults broadly on governance, risk management and compliance matters across the financial services, government agency and corporate sectors.

    Natasha holds an MBA (Executive), Master of Applied Finance, Master of Insurance and Risk Management, Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Economics) and certification as a Professional Risk Manager.

    With nearly 30 years of experience in the fraud and investigations area, 16 of those in the insurance industry, Paul is regarded as a fraud risk subject matter expert by his peers.

    A certified fraud examiner, Paul has experience working on both sides of the Tasman, previously working in IAG New Zealand and QBE Australia, and now manages the Global Investigative Services for AIG across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

    Paul has given his time and experience to write articles on fraud and investigations for ANZIIF, as well as presenting on fraud risk management at various conferences, both around Australasia and South East Asia. A former ANZIIF Risk Manager of the Year recipient, Paul has worked to raise the profile of fraud and investigations within the Australasian insurance industry and has accepted a role on the Advisory Board toassist in furthering his work in this field.

    Robert has worked in risk and insurance management for 15 years. His focus is on supporting business growth by influencing decisions on retained risk, uninsurable risks and managing insurable risk to as low as reasonably practicable. Robert started work in risk consulting, working for a number of firms before finishing his time as Principal at Marsh, looking after workforce risk solutions for a broad book of clients in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. After a long and distinguished career at Marsh he moved to the Corporate Risk team at Perth Airport, applying his risk management expertise in one of the most important infrastructure precincts in Western Australia. Robert is now at Programmed, where he is able to apply his thought leadership across retained risks, uninsurable risks and insurable risks at an executive level.

    Robert is a firm believer in understanding and simplifying risk; setting the right structure and processes to balance compliance, control and reporting requirements without stymieing growth; and educating, empowering and motivating people to make the right decision.

    Joel Laventure has over 26 years of experience in the General Insurance industry. In addition to Australia, Joel has lived and worked in insurance markets all over the globe, including Asia, North America, and Europe.

    Joel holds an MBA (Insurance) and is a Fellow of ANZIIF (Australian & New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance). Prior to founding the iO2 Insurance Group, a risk consultancy and insurance broking practice in 2016, Joel held senior management and executive positions with some of the largest global insurers worldwide, including Allianz, Chubb, and QBE. 

    Currently an ASIC Responsible Manager, Joel is a passionate member of the Australian Insurance industry, and a strong advocate for the promotion of risk management as a core discipline for insurance intermediaries.

    Adam has 29 years of experience in the Australian insurance market spanning insurance and reinsurance, both nationally and internationally. As of 2016, Adam holds the role as National Portfolio Manager, Commercial Property, Construction and Engineering at Suncorp.

    As a market and thought leader in all three products, his role covers the strategic and operational direction of these portfolios in all aspects (revenue generation, underwriting management, cost management, business environment management and financial capital management). This portfolio role works collaboratively with numerous internal and external stakeholders. 

    Prior to joining Suncorp, Adam set up 2 Lloyd's syndicates in Australia over 7 years, and also worked for a major reinsurer for 10 years. He has been both an ASIC and MAS Responsible Manager/Approved Officer.

    Adam is an active member of the Australian insurance community and participates in a number of industry forums including ANZIIF and Insurance Council of Australia.

    Ross moved into the insurance industry straight after completing his studies at university and has developed his skills and knowledge in insurance broking and placement for over three years. Starting his career at a boutique broking house in 2011 before moving to Marsh in 2013, he has had great exposure to complex and high value risks, in both local and foreign markets.

    At university he was involved in the running of a student mentor program – something he is quite keen to continue in the Industry. He believes young professionals can gain valuable insights from industry veterans to develop their skills and knowledge and become future industry leaders.

    Ross’ current role involves providing coordination, management oversight and execution of all phases of insurance due diligence, insurance placement and stewardship on behalf of private equity and/or corporate clients, for infrastructure PPP and domestic M&A activity.

    Ross is a strong advocate of ANZIIF and has been the Chair of ANZIIF Generation I Council since 2012, a member of the ANZIIF Risk Management Faculty Advisory Board at the beginning of 2016 and also completed the ANZIIF Diploma of Insurance Broking.

    Brett is the Chief Actuary and Appointed Actuary for Allianz Australia, overseeing reserving and capital management and providing strategic advice to Allianz's management and Board.

    Before this he was the Chief Risk Officer for Arch LMI, an Australian lenders mortgage insurer. Prior to that Brett was a Principal of Finity Consulting, a leading actuarial and management consulting firm. He started his career working in funds management.

    His general insurance experience covers a range of assignments for Australian and UK insurers and reinsurers, including: pricing; reserving and portfolio and capital management for various short and long tail classes, including specialising in asbestos liability projections.

    As a consultant Brett was the Appointed Actuary for three Australian insurers and the outsourced Chief Risk Officer for another Australian general insurer.

    Brett has a particular interest in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). He led Finity’s ERM practice and was the Convenor of the Risk Management Practice Committee of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (2015-17).

    He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and a qualified Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA).

    Harry is the General Manager of Risk Management Services for Regis Mutual Management, the managers of Unimutual, a discretionary mutual of Australian universities and affiliates.

    He is the former Director of the Risk Management Unit of the University of New South Wales, and past President of the Australasian University Risk and Insurance Management Society (AURIMS), and serves on industry committees for the Australian New Zealand Insurance Institute.

    He course coordinates and teaches risk management subjects at UNSW.

    Leanne is an experienced risk professional specialising in enterprise risk management and business continuity management. She leads the client risk management service for Guild Insurance. 

    Having forged strong working relationships with peak bodies across the public and private sectors, Leanne is equally skilled in engaging with governing boards and management teams, as she is with frontline staff.

    Her risk management expertise is reinforced by more than 20 years of experience in diverse roles including risk manager, risk advisor, educator and service leader.  

    In these roles, Leanne has led the development and implementation of risk management frameworks and reviewed the effectiveness of risk practices in different organisations. She is passionate about finding innovative ways to translate risk management theory into practical tools for everyday use.

    Leanne is also a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors Australia – PMIIA
